EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
The Game - I’m a hip-hop-reporter printer friendly version Send this story to a friend!

Sixshot.com: What’s up?! How are you?
The Game: Hi! How ya doin?

Sixshot.com: Are you doing shows in London or is it just promotion?
The Game: It’s just promotion, man. Just promotion.

Sixshot.com: Ok. I read this story in XXL. Simple question to start with: After all you been through, are you still in love with hip-hop?
The Game: Yeah, man! I love hip-hop. I’m married to the game, man. Hip-Hop is my bitch.

Sixshot.com: And you’re ready to rape her?
The Game: Yeah, man.

Sixshot.com: I read in an interview that you got to a point where you doubted between your first and your second album...
The Game: Doubted what?

Sixshot.com: Your life...
The Game: Yeah, man. You know, you get to... you know, those pressure points, man. They, you know, they come up sometimes, man. And you just stuck in that dark hole, man and hopefully you can find the light at the end of the tunnel, man. But I was in the tunnel and I kind of felt like, you know, the cards were stacked against me, man. And you know, sometimes life gets hard, man. And we have to make a decision, you know? Either live or die. And I chose to live.

Sixshot.com: How did you get out of there?
The Game: Three year old little boy named Harlem Qua-ran Jaylem which happens to belong to me.

Sixshot.com: But you just could have walked away!
The Game: Yeah, I could have walked away. But I decided not to, ‘cause hip-hop needs me.

Sixshot.com: I heard that you were threatened to a point were you couldn’t sleep at night. Where you had worries about your security. Do you feel save now?
The Game: What you mean my security? I never said I couldn’t sleep at night. I don’t have a hard time sleeping, ‘cause I got a big ass gun, man!

Sixshot.com: So you feel save?
The Game: Yeah, I always feel save. From everybody except myself.

Sixshot.com: Did you never feel uncomfortable? There’s still a lot of violence in hip-hop. It could have got to you.
The Game: I’m a gang member, man. I’m a Blood from Compton. I been shoot five times, I’ve seen my brother die in front of me, my other brother got shot and killed, you know I’m sayin’? Cousins and homies shot and killed… hip-hop artists don’t scare me, man.

Sixshot.com: When I talked with 50 Cent almost a year ago he was very satisfied of getting more money off your first record that you. First of all…
The Game: …you can’t believe that guy! Because that guy lies a lot, man. He didn’t get no fuckin’… he didn’t get no a lot more money off my album than I did, that dude’s a fuckin’ liar, man! That’s what he does, man. And now it’s all catchin’ up to him and G-Unit is dying. Can’t you see it?

Sixshot.com: …but what I didn’t understand about the whole thing is: When he says that he got a lot more money than you off your first record and it’s so lucrative for him, why did he put pressure on Interscope to drop you?
The Game: That’s what I said, ‘cause he lied, man! (laughs)

Sixshot.com: So what exactly happened? Why did you have to change the label?
The Game: I changed the label because I wanted to change the label. It’s too much shit going on over there and I just wanted to be free and be by myself, where I can make decisions consciously and free and, and, and really take control of my career, so that’s why I’m signed to Black Wallstreet/Geffen now.

Sixshot.com: That means it had nothing to do with Dr. Dre?
The Game: No, Sir.

Sixshot.com: Whenever I tell somebody that I like “The Documentary” there’s always someone coming up saying: “How can you like this record? This guy’s fake. Haven’t you seen this TV-show on the internet? That’s not a real gangster.” What is your comment on that?
Game: Ahm… fuck them! How about that for a comment?

Sixshot.com: And how did all that happen?
The Game: What do you mean, how did that happen? It happens like any other tv-show. I was 17 years old and I went on a tv-show and I had two bitches. And I fucked them both. They paid me 3000 dollars at 17 years old. That was big. I don’t know anybody that wouldn’t do that, man. And I would do it again today. And if anybody has a problem with that, they just come up to me, right in my face and get real close and say: Hey, I got a problem with that. And I break your fuckin’ teeth out.

Sixshot.com: So the whole thing was staged?
The Game: No, it wasn’t staged, man. It was just a TV-show. An opportunity to make some money. And I did it, and I would do it again.

Sixshot.com: But this one girl wasn’t your girlfriend at that time?
The Game: No.

Sixshot.com: Let’s talk about the new record. What did change in terms of building the record, piecing it together. How did you work on it? How did you approach this record? What did you change?
The Game: Dre executive produced the last one, I executive produced this one. That’s the change, man.

Sixshot.com: Did he step away from it or did you decide to take control?
The Game: Ahm… let’s just say that Dre executive produced the last album and I’m executive producing this album. And I leave everybody to wonder why and when it happened.

Sixshot.com: Why?
The Game: Because. Question marks are better than giving away good shit, man. You gotta keep people on the edge of their fucking seats. That’s what I do best.

Sixshot.com: But there will still be some Dre produced songs on the record, right?
The Game: No, there won’t. No.

Sixshot.com: That’s new to me. I read that you worked with Dre early in the recording process and did some songs with him that you’re allowed to use.
The Game: But I don’t wanna use them.

Sixshot.com: Why?
The Game: Huh? Because my albums done. I don’t need ‘em.

Sixshot.com: Ok. Why don’t you take me through the album a little bit and tell me who’s on it and what it’s about?
The Game: November 13th, man. You gotta wait till that date. My album, man, I’m keeping it locked, I’m keeping it tight. Everybody wants to know who’s on it, if Dre’s on it, how is it gonna be, is it a classic. You know, just wait till that date. It’s coming out on November 13th. In just a few days you’ll find all the answers to your questions on that album.

Sixshot.com: Ok, just let me know one thing: Last time, Cool & Dre blessed you with the best beat of the year for “Hate It Or Love It”. What did they come up with for the new album?
The Game: I did a new song with Cool & Dre, man, and this gonn’ have the same type of feel, you know, that “Hate It Or Love It” had. But you got to wait till November 13th to figure out the title. It’s all there, you know that. The CD comes with a booklet, you can read it and figure out all the things you want, you can listen and all your questions be answered, man. On November 13th. I love that big ass question mark. That’s what keeps people going everyday, man.

Sixshot.com: You want them to read an interview consisting only of question marks? They want some infos!
The Game: Aw, man. Get it from somewhere else, man. But not from the source. Let there be rumor. Let there be whatever man. It’s only a few days. If they can’t wait a few days for the Game’s album and they can wait ten years for “Detox” – that says a lot about hip-hop.

Sixshot.com: You finally like rumors?
The Game: Yeah, man. Let ‘em talk. As long as they talk about me, it’s good.

Sixshot.com: You dropped a lot of names on the first album…
Game: …and I’m dropping a lot of names on this album. And I gonna be dropping names on the third album and the fourth and the fifth.

Sixshot.com: But on the first album, it was more from a fan perspective, right?
The Game: I’m a hip-hop reporter, man. So I’m always gonna drop names. For the rest of my career. People get used to it or they can leave my shit on the shelf up in the store. I don’t care. My real fans know what’s up. I’m not worried about all the critics and all that, man.

Sixshot.com: Are you thinking about joining a new team?
The Game: What new team?

Sixshot.com: I heard some rumors about Murder Inc.
The Game: Nah, man. What do you mean? I’m bigger,  I’m just as big as Murder Inc.. Why would I join Murder Inc. when I got Black Wallstreet?

Sixshot.com: Maybe because no one knows the other members of Black Wallstreet?
The Game: Who’s on Murder Inc.? Why should I join Murder Inc.? I’m my own person. I’m not joining nobody. Man, I’m a one man fucking monster. I don’t need to join up with nobody. I don’t need nobody’s help on shit. Man, I am hip-hop, breathing, shitting, eating, sleeping hip-hop. And I can’t be fucked with right now. I’ma forced to be reckoned with. Anybody that don’t like it, they can put out a song and I will dismantle them piece by piece lyrically.

Sixshot.com: I just have the impression that you never had the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of your labor. You’re always under pressure.
The Game: Well, it’s all good. I don’t need to enjoy that, man. I enjoy spending time with my son. So I don’t need to enjoy the fruits of my labor or the fruits of anything else, man. I’m just enjoying my life.

Sixshot.com: What do you make money for then?
The Game: I don’t make money to spend it. I make money to secure the future of my family, financially.

Sixshot.com: Will the album still be called “The Doctor’s Advocate”?
The Game: Yup.

Sixshot.com: Why?
The Game: Huh?

Sixshot.com: Why?
The Game: Because I named it that. If I knew your name I can call it your name if I want to. And there’s nothing you can do about it.

Sixshot.com: I guarantee you now: I wouldn’t do anything about it, if you would call your album “Adrian’s Advocate”.
The Game: (Laughs) Yeah, man. We wait for the third album. I just named it “The Doctor’s Advocate” because I felt like it. That’s what it is. That’s the title of the album. People dig to deep, ask too many questions and make things bigger than what they really are. All it is, is writing on the front of the book, man.

Sixshot.com: I know, but it’s a reference to Dr. Dre and he’s….
The Game: …how do you know? Is Dr. Dre the only doctor in the world?

Sixshot.com: So who are you referring to if not to Dr. Dre?
The Game: I mean I might not be referring to nobody. Or I might be referring to somebody. November 13th is that date.

Sixshot.com: On that date I will know what you mean with that title?
The Game: Definitely. And if you don’t, call me back and I be sure to break it down for you.

Sixshot.com: Well, thanks a lot then…
The Game: You’re welcome.
